The LomoChrome Metropolis 2021 Formula: a Review by Kate Grout

2

After a successful run with our LomoChrome Metropolis color film introduced in 2019, we returned to the lab and came out with a new 2021 formula! We gave a few Lomographers the opportunity to test out our first rolls to see just what this new film is capable of. Today, we share photographer Kate Grout's results and impressions from Maine, US.

Hey Kate! How is life as a photographer these days?

Hello! Life as a photographer--living my dreams! Life has been busy! I am lucky to have photography work and projects going, as well as my full-time job. I am just now slowing down from a full summer of shooting festivals, weddings, portraits, and a few very special Acadia National Park visits! I shot some of my favorite photos ever in the last few months, so that feels quite incredible!

What was your inspiration for this shoot? Did you plan your shots or go with the flow?

My inspiration often comes from nature, but with this shoot, Jess and I were in the moment and going with the flow of what we felt from around us. We didn’t have the sun that day, so we were focused on finding the light. We were working with the lines and shapes of our surroundings to fill each frame with something stunning.

Have you shot with the Metropolis film before? If so, how did you like this new formula of this emulsion?

Yes, I ordered during the pre-order because I was so excited to try it! I’ve been shooting Metropolis for two years now! I love this film, and I really liked how the new emulsion came out. The colors seem sharper and I am really digging the dark tones.

How did you play with the muted color palette of the LomoChrome Metropolis?

I tried to shoot a variance between nature, people, and buildings. I wanted to show the different contrasts, and also how nature looks on this palette. It really has a timeless feel to it. I shot a couple of double exposures as well to test how the colors came through and how dark the photos would be.

What was your favorite thing about shooting with the LomoChrome Metropolis?

I love the muted colors, but also that they are still visible and sharp. And I love the moody quality of Metropolis.

Which camera did you pair this film with?

I used my Nikon F3 (with a Nikon 50 mm lens) for this shoot. I had to use this camera, especially for the ease of taking beautiful double exposures!

Who would you recommend the LomoChrome Metropolis to and for what style of photography?

I feel like Metropolis could be a film that anyone would want to use, especially for fun and experimenting! Obviously, if you need to shoot straight color or black and white film for a wedding, paid event, client, etc., maybe save this film for street shooting, landscapes, and portraits. I have taken some stunning portraits on this film, and really appreciate what the subdued but punchy colors add to the photos.

If you could reshoot this film, what would your next subjects be?

I would try to shoot in a more populated and thriving city (no offense to our lovely small towns in Maine), because this film gives a cool, moody quality to architecture, shapes, and lines. I would do more portraits in a metropolitan area, but also scenic portraits to show the beauty of the natural world.

If you could summarize the LomoChrome Metropolis in three words, what would they be?

Moody, contrast, timeless.

Anything else you would like to add?

Thank you so much for the opportunity to test this film! My film journey (as an adult) started with LomoChrome Purple, and I love everything Lomography! It has been very special and an honor that you like my work and appreciate my thoughts on these films!!
