Christine Turek's Glowing Portraiture on Lomography Color Negative

Christine Turek is a fashion, beauty, and portrait photographer based in Montreal, Canada. Her sleek and glowing medium-format portraits immediately caught our attention, and so we wanted to get to know a bit about her vision and work. Accompanying our conversation are her photos taken on Lomography Color Negative 100, 400, and 800 film.

Hi Christine, welcome to the Lomography Online Magazine! May you introduce yourself to our readers?

Hi, my name is Christine Turek. I’m a photographer based in Montreal, Canada.

How did you get started with analogue photography? And what’s your relationship with it now?

I started photography when I was 12 years old when my father bought me my first camera, a Ricoh KR-10, 35mm film camera. I learnt to shoot on film, then later on moved onto digital and then went back to film. I feel that film photography really captures the subject better. There’s something more real about it, to feel the film. When you have less shots, you really take more time with each frame.

Why do you mainly shoot portraits?

Portraits are my main subject, it’s something that I’ve always loved to shoot, seeing each different face, every detail and trait. Whether the model has a lot of experience in front of the camera or if it’s their first time, I love to capture that moment. It’s not only about taking someone’s picture, it’s really about putting them at ease, and the connection in that moment. It’s different each time, sometimes it’s not as you expect, but most of the time it’s really special.

What are some of your most recent inspirations?

I try mainly to have each model I work with inspire me, like I’m capturing their individual personalities during the shoot. I often work one on one and I feel that really brings out something more in a personal portrait shoot.

For this beautiful series, you shot a range of our color negative films. What were your first impressions of these films?

I love the Lomo films, the colors are nice and warm and rich. I especially like using them when I'm doing a colorful makeup shoot to really bring out the color!

What camera did you use for these photos?

I shoot with the Mamiya RB67, Mamiya RZ67 and the Pentax67. If I’m shooting in studio I will mainly shoot with the Mamiya RZ67 or RB67, and Pentax67 I like using on location

Top three must-have items for a shoot?

Good light, hair brush and tripod.

Do you have any exciting projects or collaborations coming up?

At the moment my new project is my new studio space, and I am very excited about this place! Many future photoshoots will be happening soon!
