Testing the Full Potential of the Petzval 80.5 f/1.9 MKII Bokeh Control Art Lens

When you think about the Petzval lens the first thought that comes to mind is the swirly bokeh that is the iconic look of this lens. For today's article, we want to talk about the ability of the New Petzval 80.5 f/1.9 MKII Bokeh Control Art Lens to deliver stunning images for commercial work, just as well as it does for portraits. This is an underestimated quality in the Petzval Lens that is often overlooked by photographers.

With the new LomoApparat Chiyoda Edition, hitting the streets of the world,

We took some mood shots for our new LomoApparat Chiyoda Edition camera and we loved the results we got when using the New Petzval 80.5 f/1.9 MKII Bokeh Control Art Lens.

The great achievement of the Petzval Lens is the incredible sharpness at its center combined with its fast f stops. It is specifically on the sharpness of the lens that we want to focus. Simply step up a couple of f stops, and you will see the great potential of this lens.

Rightfully this lens has a reputation as perfect for portrait photography, but let's talk about the uncharted potential it has for mood shots and commercial photography. When tested on some sample objects, we found that this lens was adding an unmistakable touch of character to the images.

We used it in two main light situations, one in low key and one in high key. We were not disappointed with how well the lens performed in both cases. As this is a manual lens, you have to be meticulous and pay attention to the detail. Be mindful that you must recalibrate your focus for each shot. This requires you to be extra accurate each time.

As you all know, with the Petzval lens, the lower your f-number the more you will get the swirly bokeh effect in the outer area of the image. So make sure that is the look you want to get in your images. Otherwise, we suggest keeping a higher number above f8 and all the way to f16 to be sure that the distortion will be corrected.

Other than this shrewdness there is no particular know-how you need that should prevent you from using it for a commercial shoot. You can work with the Petzval just like you would with any lens. More importantly, don't box this lens up to be used only occasionally. It will expand your range and give you a distinctive look in your portfolio. So don't shy away from it, and add some style to your commercial work.
